For Christians, Jesus Christ is the model for allowing ourselves to grieve the loss of a loved one. No matter your religious convictions or upbringing, it is okay to mourn and weep. Please don’t think it is more spiritual to hold in your tears than to allow them to flow.

In the Biblical story alluded to above, when Jesus came to the home of sisters, Mary and Martha, after their brother Lazarus had died, Jesus saw their grief. Even though he was the Divine, and in just a few minutes he would raise Lazarus from the death, he cried. He felt sad for his friends, and he wept.  These two words suggest that as followers of Jesus Christ, we too, have been given permission to weep in sorrow during a loss. “The Lord is near as we walk through our trouble.” Psalm 34:18
